About

History
As you may, or may not have guessed, the hotel derives its name from the historical event which took place on the morning of 15th June 1919, when Capt. John Alcock and Lt. Arthur Brown guided their Vickers-Vimy biplane through the early morning sky to a bumpy landing in the bogs just south of Clifden, near the Marconi Wireless Station in Derrygimlagh. This marked the worlds first trans-Atlantic flight, an epic journey of over 1,900 miles from take off to landing in a plane decidedly less comfortable than the ones that regularly make the crossings these days!

Location
Surrounded by majestic mountains, nestled in a valley which overlooks a picturesque harbour, Clifden has attracted countless visitors, many of whom return again and again to enjoy the 'craic' in one of the most scenic areas and unique areas in Ireland.

Home to the internationally renowned Connemara Pony Show, the wonderfully energetic Clifden Community Artsweek, some of the finest hill walking in the country, and a reputation for producing the finest seafood on the west coast, it is true to say that Clifden has something to offer everyone. Steeped in history, this sleepy town is undoubtedly one of the true last treasures in western Europe. The Connemara Pony Show, held on the third Thursday in August each year, is a splash of colour and excitement during the first month of the Autumn. Many fine Connemara Ponies are to be seen as deals are done by local pony breeders and people from as far away as New Zealand, Canada or Saudi Arabia, and money pass from hand to hand in a show that sees generations of families continuing on a tradition that will pass on to the next generation! Somebody is having fun!
